Good Afternoon,
SWANA is very excited to announce this year’s Safety Day activities will take place on September 19, 2024, and you can participate with us. Join SWANA and its partners, SC Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) and Redwood Materials as we promote safe handling and recycling of lithium-ion batteries.
Enclosed you will find everything you need to implement your own safety awareness program at your facility, in your community, at schools or other locations where you would like to share this information. The enclosed Safety Day Kit includes:
- A lithium-ion battery safe handling flyer that you can make copies of for distribution.
- A press release that can be sent out to your media contacts making them aware of the Safety Day initiative, and general battery safety.
- A collection event “how to” sheet with information on how to start your own collection day event with one of our co-sponsors, Redwood Materials.
Lithium batteries pose a significant safety risk for the solid waste and recycling professionals that are handling these items. In addition to the safety concerns for our employees, our facilities that receive them for recycling, or our disposal facilities that inadvertently receive them mixed in a waste load, are also at risk. Lithium-ion batteries come in all shapes and sizes, are found in a wide variety of products and can pose a serious threat if not managed properly.
On behalf of the Board of Directors for the SC Chapter of SWANA, and our partners SC Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) and Redwood Materials, I hope you will take this opportunity to participate in SWANA’s Safety Day Activities. Kick off your own collection event on September 19th or simply post the flyer around your office and at your facilities. Be sure to let everyone know they need to “Be Battery Smart”. Let’s get charged up for battery safety!
